All seniors must write a resume as part of the AHS graduation requirements. It is part of the English IV curriculum.  A resume is a summary about the individual.  Although seniors are required to have a completed resume on file, it is never too early for any student to write a resume.  It can be updated at the student's discretion.  There are many different styles of resume writing.  Before a resume is designed, the instructor should approve the design if it is to be used for class credit.

A good resume should take about one minute of the reader's time.  During that minute he or she should be able to locate easily all of the information to consider the you for an interview.  Otherwise, your application will probably land in the not-to-be-interviewed stack.

Tips

  • Use action verbs.
  • Use present tense for jobs now doing and past tense for past employment.
  • Make sure everything is parallel--be consistent.
  • Use a font that is easy to read and common especially if it is going to be sent electronically.
  • Try to keep your resume to one page.  If you have many awards and accomplishments considering adding an honor resume as a separate document.

Components

  • Personal Data  information about the individual including email and cell phone
  • Objective position, membership, job individual wants
  • Education dates and places of attendance, course highlights
  • Achievements honors, awards, memberships, leadership roles, abilities
  • Experiences work activities and employment beginning with the most recent
